Residents and town officials in Happy Valley-Goose Bay say they’re fed up and they’ve drafted a Call to Action to address public safety concerns in the town.
The town has long dealt with a growing transient population, and while numerous meetings have taken place and efforts have been made to address the complex problem, the issue persists.
Last fall, the provincial government released a public safety review on issues faced in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, including six recommendations, which then-Justice Minister Bernard Davis accepted and committed to implementing.
The town has drafted a letter to Premier John Hogan and Justice Minister John Haggie seeking “immediate intervention, starting with a stronger police presence,” and they’re asking members of the public to sign on.
The letter outlines harassment, public intoxication, and lewd acts that have become commonplace and have reached a crisis point.
They’re demanding “concrete action” from government officials in dealing with the issue.
