The City of Mount Pearl has launched a public survey as part of its Community Safety and Well-being Plan.
It comes in response to two violent attacks in the community last fall that rattled residents, causing fear and anxiety.
Mayor Dave Aker says they learned a lot from a community meeting held after the incidents, and they hope to incorporate some of that into their safety plan.
He says the city wants to make sure that it gets it right by creating a plan that is relevant, action-oriented, understands what people’s perceptions are, looks at root causes and combines that with the facts.
He says while things have died down, the lasting impact of the attacks continues. “We just can’t sit around and wait for something to happen next.” He says the survey is meant to “dig down a little bit deeper to find out amongst the layers, what the best way is to change the perception of safety within the community, and to get at the root cause.”
