It’s not quite DOGE, but this week Prime Minister Mark Carney said he’s giving direction to his governent to find 7 per cent cuts in spending by 2026.
He’s looking for 10 per cent by 2027 and wants another 15 per cent reduction in spending by 2028.
So far, Carney has said the cuts won’t apply to social programs or provincial transfer payments, but that leaves one to wonder just where the money will come from.
Lori Turnbull, who teaches political science at Dalhousie University, says Carney campaigned on reducing the increase in federal expenditures from 9 per cent per year to two, but this seems to be a different project altogether.
“He’s saying to the ministers now to go find 7 per cent now but what s that going to look like when he gets to 10 per cent and 15? I don’t know where that’s going to come from unless he cuts transfers to the provinces, but this could end up being big job loss,” says Turnbull.
