The forestry minister is urging residents to keep a close eye on the provincial government’s new fire dashboard, to keep abreast of the latest forest fire information.
Up to 169 forest fires have been reported in the province so far this year, compared to just 51 reported over all of 2024.
There are six active forest fires burning in the province today most of which are held or under control. The most problematic fire is the one burning at Ragged Harbour near Musgrave Harbour which forced the evacuation of the community.
Meanwhile, the fire Chance Harbour grew from 1700 to 1800 hectares yesterday despite extensive fire fighting efforts, however it currently is not posing a threat to nearby Jamestown or Winter Brook.
Fire duty officer Wes Morgan says favourable weather conditions mean they don’t expect the 1,700 hectare fire to expand very greatly today.
“So right now, those are the only two fires that we’re spending most of our resources with,” says Morgan.
The provincial government says at this time the Musgrave Harbour fire is showing minimal movement and is unlikely to affect the town today.
The fire has not crossed the highway towards Banting Memorial Park.
