Residents of Bell Island should see some relief from a major inconvenience starting today.
The local gas station is set to reopen this morning at 8:00—pumping gas for the first time in about eight weeks.
Mayor Philip Tobin says it took a lot of work involving the new owners, and various government agencies and departments to make it happen.
It means that area residents will finally be able to gas up at home instead of having to take the ferry to gas up elsewhere.
That in turn says Tobin, should help to alleviate some of the stress on the ferry system.
“We had to face the challenges of everybody in the community leaving the community to travel to the city just to get fuel for their vehicles. So we’re glad to finally get this gas station deal finalized, and get the gas station open for the residents in our community.” He believes “that will alleviate some strain and stress on a lot of residents in our community.”
In the meantime, Tobin admits, this summer has been a challenging one when it comes to the all-important ferry service which has seen a lot of downtime due to an aging ferry fleet. He says meetings with area MHA Fred Hutton are ongoing.
