The fires burning at Ragged Harbour and Chance Harbour remain out of control, but ground crews are reporting progress in their efforts today.
Fire Duty Officer Wes Morgan describes the Ragged Harbour fire as a slow-moving ground fire with “many, many” hotspots and open flames.
Morgan says the rain earlier this week helped to dampen down the smoke and flame allowing ground crews to begin their work.
In the Ragged Harbour fire they’re concentrating their efforts on the northern flank of the fire closest to Musgrave Harbour.
“So they really focused on that area today,” says Morgan. He says the latest report is that they’ve made “really good progress across much of that northern perimeter.”
He says “the perimeter is what determines a fire. We get a lot of questions sometimes about a fire being out of control, and what does that actually mean. What that means is that the perimeter has not been secured to the point that we feel it is not going to pass containment.”
