Weary residents of Musgrave Harbour are finally back in their homes nearly a week after an evacuation order was issued due to a fast-moving wildfire encroaching on the town.
The order was lifted yesterday afternoon.
Public Safety Minister John Haggie commended the crews for their work in gaining the upper hand, in extraordinary conditions.
“They have never seen 40 mm of rain produce no improvement in the fire weather index,” Haggie said, highlighting the unprecedented nature of the fire.
Crews remain on the scene working on hot spots. Residents may continue to see some smoke.
Meanwhile, cabin owners in the Chance Harbour area anxious to check on their properties will be allowed access to some areas starting this morning. A map of accessible areas can be found here. Zones marked red are not accessible.
