The fire in Conception Bay North continues to spread and reached Ochre Pit Cove and Western Bay last night.
Premier John Hogan says losses are significant.
“Unfortunately, this fire now is at the areas of Ochre Pit Cove and Western Bay and we anticipate from what we can see now, there is significant loss in both those communities.”
Hogan says government is working with Ottawa on financial assistance for those affected by the disaster.
“We have been in contact as well with the federal government in terms of potential financial assistance and disaster relief” says Hogan. “That analysis will come when we get through this. I certainly look forward to working with our federal partners in rebuilding and of these communities and losses throughout the province.”
He is offering assurances to residents of the North Shore who feel frustrated and “deserted” that decisions on firefighting efforts are made by fire behavior specialists.
“Just so it’s clear to everyone” says Hogan “decisions are made with regards to air assets are based on the expert advice from our fire behavior specialists and our operations team.” He says they’re working 24/7 to keep people safe and “have done this before…We continue to take expert advice from those who know what they’re doing.”
