Flights scheduled to arrive in St. John’s from Montreal and Toronto or depart for the same have been cancelled today as the strike by airline attendants kicks in.
Deer Lake and Gander are facing similar disruptions.
More than 10-thousand Air Canada attendants are off the job after a strike deadline passed without an eleventh-hour deal.
The airline has said it will try to book marooned passengers on flights operated by other carriers, but it’s unlikely to happen in an acceptable time frame.
Air Canada flights between St. John’s and Halifax are not affected as they are operated by PAL Airlines.
The strike comes at a time when YYT was preparing for its busiest weekend ever with two waves of athletes coming and going for the Canada Summer Games.
Meanwhile, the airline is telling customers not to go to the airport unless they have a confirmed ticket on an airline other than Air Canada or Air Canada Rouge.
For those customers due to travel soon and whose flights have not yet been cancelled, the airline has put in place a goodwill policy to allow them to rebook their travel or obtain a credit for future travel.
