A local insurance broker is setting the record straight for thousands of evacuees wondering about what property is covered in the event of a wildfire.
Adam Nolan, a co-owner at MUNN Insurance, says they’ve received a high volume of inquiries from people wondering if their worldly goods are covered.

Wildfire damage is covered under your property insurance, as is smoke damage in many cases, but check your policy to confirm specifics. Comprehensive auto insurance coverage, meanwhile, covers cars, motorcycles and ATVs.
Claims can be opened once confirmation is received that damage has occurred.
For those who don’t have specific fire or smoke coverage on their policies, you may be out of luck. Insurers usually place a moratorium on home and auto insurance policy changes or new coverage if you live within a specified distance of a wildfire. That includes increased limits, adding coverage, or purchasing a new policy. Changes can be made once a wildfire is under control.
