It’s full steam ahead for the provincial government as it plans to hold an election on or before October 14.
Last week, independent MHAs Paul Lane and Eddie Joyce penned a letter to the premier asking him to consider opening the House of Assembly to pass a motion that would delay the fixed election date, given the devastation caused by wildfires – particularly in the Conception Bay North area.
Lane says that would give time for government to focus on the fires and their aftermath, rather than on door-knocking.
He doesn’t believe people, especially those in the affected areas, are interested in an election right now. He thinks the election should be moved back by one or two months to let government’s full focus be on the fires and their aftermath.
Premier John Hogan says that “in terms of the fire, it doesn’t play a part in if (they) call an election early or not.”
And when asked about opening the House of Assembly early he said, “We will get through the fire season, and we will get through the election.”
