The city of St. John’s has provided its first look inside the new Mews Centre to news reporters.
Inside the main entrance is a secure reception area, where all users will have to check in with main desk, and be buzzed-in to access the rest of the facility.
Inside those locked doors is an open area with a central staircase. To the right is the basketball court, and straight ahead are multi-use courts for activities such as squash. Over to the left are spaces for the St. John’s REAL program and the BGC – formerly known as the Boys and Girls Club.
Upstairs is a track for walking and running which wraps around the top of the basketball court, and the pool.
The pool is split into two sections. The first includes a splash pad geared more towards smaller children. The second is the larger pool which has capacity for lane swims, and even a rock wall that extends out over the pool.
There is a seating area outside the pool, and the windows are specially designed so that they can be blocked out depending on who is using the facility.
There are also many accessibility features; there is an elevator, the pool has a ramp for wheelchair users, and all signage has brail and special colour contrasts for those who are visually impaired.
The old Mews Centre closes at the end of the week, and the new building will open to the public on September 15th.
