The local Ukrainian National Federation is branching out with chapters in the process of being set up in Gander and Corner Brook.
Thousands of Ukrainians now call Newfoundland and Labrador home after the province opened its doors to those who left the country seeking a safe place after the Russian invasion.
The province’s Ukrainian help desk, set up in Poland, offered an alternative for Ukrainians with nowhere to go. Approximately 6,000 Ukrainians landed in the province.
The creative director with the Ukrainian National Federation in Newfoundland and Labrador, Sofia Dubyk, says they’re now setting up offices in other parts of the province.
“We start(ed) here on the Avalon, and now we start a connection with the Ukrainian community in Corner Brook. The last couple of weeks we have started to make connections with those in Gander.” She says there are only 50 people, but they’re Ukrainian.
The provincial government is providing $750,000 to establish a dedicated hub to support Ukrainians on the west coast.
The new hub, in Corner Brook, will offer integrated, bilingual services for Ukrainians living in the region.
