Tony Humby’s defence lawyer focused on inconsistencies in the testimony from one of the alleged victims in the sexual violence trial yesterday.
The young man, now 23, said he was 16 when he first hooked up with Humby, then 58, on the dating site Grindr.
Humby picked him up almost every day near his downtown youth shelter, he said, driving to his trailer home where they drank, got high and had sex.
But Humby’s Legal Aid lawyer Mark Gruchy took issue with that story, not the least of which was the claim that it happened that often.
He cited several differences between the man’s testimony and his initial statement to police, which can happen with the passage of time, though Gruchy noted his statement was only taken this time last year.
The Indigenous man also said Humby gave him about $50 after each visit, which he spent on cigarettes and cocaine.
He’s the second of 11 complainants in the case, which continues this week, then on and off until next May.
In the midst of it all, and hanging over the trial, is a so-called Jordan application which could see some or all of the charges go away due to trial delays.
