Mowi, which operates a salmon farm on the province’s south coast, has confirmed the detection of Infectious Salmon Anaemia in Atlantic salmon in one pen at Little Burdock Cove near Rencontre East.
The company tells VOCM News that the provincial government was informed when staff became aware of the incident, and Mowi is taking steps to address the issue under the province’s oversight.
Mowi calls the die-off a “painful loss for the dedicated and hard-working staff who have cared for and reared” the fish over the last year.
The pen has been harvested and the site is empty, and a quarantine order, issued on July 29th, applies to all remaining gear, including pens and nets on site.
The incident represents an economic loss for the company in what Mowi says is proving to be “an environmentally tough year.”
