Firefighting efforts continue in the Lethbridge area after fire broke out yesterday near Sexton’s Lumber.
Three water bombers worked on the fire yesterday, assisting three local volunteer fire departments on the ground.
Both Heritage Collegiate and Anthony Paddon Elementary are closed today. Residents from Oldford’s Hill on Bayside Drive to the bridge at Forest Drive remain under an evacuation order according to Annie Harris with the Local Service District.
Fire duty officer Wes Morgan says fire spread into nearby woods affecting approximately one hectare.
He says rain in the forecast is helping the situation, and crews are on scene today continuing their efforts to contain the blaze.
He says the fire showed no real growth overnight. Ground crews are back on the scene, along with a helicopter, focusing primarily on the bark pile.
Reception area for evacuees moved to Salvation Army
A reception centre for people affected by the Lethbridge wildfire has moved.
The centre, previously located at Anthony Paddon Elementary, has moved to the Salvation Army Citadel on Islandview Drive.
All affected residents are asked to register with the Canadian Red Cross on site, or by calling 1-800-863-6582.
