A well-known and respected medical specialist has passed away.
Dermatologist Dr. Wayne Gulliver passed away on Friday at the age of 67.
From humble beginnings, Gulliver earned a Bachelor of Science and MD from Memorial University, completing his Dermatology residence at McGill in 1989.
He returned to St. John’s to set up his practice, and was a lead researcher on a team that put Newfoundland and Labrador genetic research on the map in discovering the (HLA-Cw6) gene responsible for psoriasis.
He was also the first Newfoundlander and Labradorian to serve as chair of medicine at MUN, and was a recipient of the Albert Neisser award, considered as the ‘Nobel Prize’ of dermatology.
Donations in his memory are being accepted for the Vera Perlin Society or the Prosthetics Department at the Miller Centre.
