The Canadian Federation of Students and MUN’s Students Union have released a list of demands ahead of the provincial election.
The fall semester started this week and both unions say reducing tuition is at the top of their list for prospective leaders.
Nicolas Keough of the Canadian Federation of Students says repeated requests to lower tuition have gone unanswered. He’s asking students to vote for parties that “won’t turn their backs on them.”
“We want to see a rollback to pre-2022 levels of tuition at Memorial and at CNA and we want to see those rates frozen for the foreseeable future,” he told reporters at MUN’s Student Centre.
“Another thing is we want to see increased funding to Memorial and to CNA and we want to see paid placements for all work term funds.”
Education Minister Bernard Davis reiterated that MUN is autonomous of government, and the province provides more funding to the university than most other provinces.
“Memorial University is the one responsible for tuition,” says Davis “we fund the university to the tune of almost 70 per cent, the highest across the country, and we continue to work with them on issues that come up.”
