The president of the Athletics NorthEAST running club is raising concerns about what she calls a “level of aggression not seen before” from drivers in the metro region.
Margo Soucy is raising the issue following a provincial marathon they organized over the weekend.
She says that event spanned through the city, with 150 traffic marshals on site to help out.
She says it was eye-opening for those volunteers to see the level of aggression that people were displaying.
She says 95 per cent of drivers are respectful, but there was a noticeable increase in some choosing to be disrespectful. She says people weren’t listening to instructions, driving through barriers, and many volunteers reported being sworn at.
Outside of the marathon, Soucy recalls a scary near miss that recently took place involving her son.
She and her son were taking part in a regular running group when they came to a crosswalk.
She says they were in the middle of the crosswalk when a driver came upon them. She says they were either going to roll through the stop sign or come to a late stop. Soucy yelled and her son had to sprint to get out of the way. Luckily the driver was able to stop in time, but Soucy says it was a scary situation.
