Medavie, the company which has been awarded the contract to deliver and administer integrated road and air ambulance services across the province, has started recruiting for positions that need to be filled.
John Ferguson, a VP with Medavie, says they’ve already started recruiting for some additional 150 jobs, most of which will be administrative positions.
A phased transition with NLHS has begun, and he expects it will take a couple of months to get all the job postings up.
Ferguson can’t say precisely where certain assets – whether it’s road ambulances or helicopters – will be based. He says those decisions will be made over time and based on the appropriate data.
With respect to ground ambulances, we expect over the next number of years to create and evaluate a significant amount of data,” regarding call volumes, their location, demographic shifts, and changes to the health system among other things.
The $561 million, 10-year contract came into effect September 1. Medavie runs and administers similar integrated ambulance services in other provinces like Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI. Ferguson says they believe they have the skill and experience to support services in Newfoundland and Labrador, and acknowledges that they’re open to listening based on the province’s extensive geography.
