Newfoundland Power and NL Hydro are responding to the Consumer Advocate who is once again floating the concept of smart meters.
Dennis Browne expressed dismay that the province’s two electrical utilities are showing little interest in the smart meter concept, despite the fact that many other provinces are using them.
Newfoundland Power says it recognizes the potential benefits of implementing smart meters – also known as Advanced Metering Infrastructure – but says the cost is significant and would result in increased costs for consumers, over and above the costs of current metering.
Both utilities say legislation requires them to supply power at the least-cost for consumers and precludes them from implementing smart meters at this time.
Newfoundland Power says that existing Automated Meter Reading meters are highly accurate and reliable, as confirmed through regular external testing.
Newfoundland Power says there are no funds in its current capital infrastructure budget that would allow for smart meters and both NL Hydro and Newfoundland Power are continuing to monitor the situation for future implementation once it becomes cost-effective and in the best interest of customers.
