Supreme Court officials are in the process of selecting a jury for a St. John’s second-degree murder trial.
Twenty-four-year-old Robert Belbin was charged following the stabbing death of 22-year-old Seamus Secord more than two-and-half years ago.
It happened on Feb. 7th, 2023 on Mayor Avenue in the Rabbittown area of the city.
Six weeks have been set aside for the trial which could begin as early as this afternoon if jury selection is completed by then.
It began in Supreme Court this morning, and while the required number of jurors and alternates was reached, the final complement has yet to be confirmed.
A number of prospective jurors were excused this morning for various personal reasons, at the discretion of Justice Trina Simms, and sometimes in consultation with the Crown and defence.
Belbin is charged with second-degree murder in the case, as well as breaching conditions of the release he was on at the time of the crime.
