The NDP is boasting the largest slate of female candidates in the province’s history.
Leader Jim Dinn says women made up a small percentage of the elected officials in the House of Assembly’s last sitting, and he’s hoping to change that after election day.
The party has a full slate of candidates for the first time since 2015, and Dinn says 21 of the 40 are female or non-binary.
“I would like to believe that the people who joined us see us as a much more egalitarian and a more equitable party devoted to raising up the well-being and improving the well-being of all people of this province, the ones who are left on the margins,” he told reporters.
“I would say that it comes down to the power aspect, like what we are about. You look at any of our platforms, what we’ve raised in the House of Assembly, but I can’t help but think in terms of parties, is it about power or is it about the well-being of the people in our province?”
Dinn is also reiterating his call to end corporate donations to political parties.
