We’re exactly one away from local government elections, and Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador says it appears that interest in serving the community has been keen.
Councils in about a third of the towns went in by acclamation, and some did not have enough people come forward to achieve a quorum but many towns and cities have full slates – and then some.
Amy Coady, a councillor in Grand Falls-Windsor and President of MNL, believes their “Make Your Mark” campaign is having an effect in keeping local government elections front and centre.
“Grand Falls-Windsor has 16 candidates on the ballot although our mayor was acclaimed, Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s has 16, Dover has 14, Parsons Pond has 13 and Point Leamington has 12 so the response has been good,” says Coady.
Voting day is Thursday, October 2.
