Newfoundland and Labrador has become the first province in Canada to cross a “golden age” threshold.
Statistics Canada’s second quarter population data show that over one in four in Newfoundland and Labrador is 65 years of age or older.
It is the first time in history that any province or territory has achieved that age distinction. All, including Newfoundland and Labrador, have always fallen short of having a quarter of the population receiving their old age cheques.
As of July 1st, 25.2 per cent of the people in NL have celebrated their 65th but the average in Canada is 19.5 per cent.
The median age of the population in this province is 47.8 years old, the oldest in the country. Nunavut has the youngest median age – 27.1 years.
