The fallout from the Canada Post strike continues to cause wrinkles in the municipal elections and a candidates in ward 2 in St. John’s has concerns over the new location of a polling station.
The City of St. John’s announced earlier this week that it was moving back its municipal elections due to the strike.
The polling station at the Knights of Columbus on St. Clare Avenue is no longer in the mix, so people will have to use the Centre for Performance and Creativity (formerly Cochrane United Church.)
Ward 2 nominee Greg Smith says many of the voters do not have cars.
He says the move could have a big impact on voter turnout.
“The needs in Ward 2 obviously are very socioeconomic heavy. Not everybody in that ward has a car,” he told VOCM News.
“I grew up in centre city in social housing, social assistance, and I didn’t have a car. So when we went to vote, we walked down to the Knights of Columbus, which encompasses two social housing areas that are close by and seniors complexes.”
Also on the ballot in Ward 2 are Philip Barton, Greg Dunne, Brenda Halley, Todd Perrin and Blair Trainor.
