Native son Rick Mercer’s Canada Comedy Tour has zigzagged across the country and has reached Atlantic Canada.
Mercer, who has a supporting cast of three, will be at the Arts and Culture Centre in St. John’s this coming weekend.
A lot has happened since he and his team began formulating the concept a year-and-a-half ago but Mercer says he did not alter the show.
Many Canadians are anxious and nervous with all the uncertainty being created by U.S. President Donald Trump.
He says, if anything, there’s more of need for comedy now than ever because Canadians are anxious about a lot, including our relationship with the United States.
“Audiences are coming out and when I talk about these themes, they’re loving it.”
American comedian Jimmy Fallon got a good headshaking from the network and Trump over remarks following the shooting death of Charlie Kirk, but Mercer says he never faced any such consequences during his many years on This Hour Has 22 Minutes, and The Rick Mercer Report.
He says people from the PMO – whether that was Chretien’s office, Paul Martin’s or Stephen Harper’s – told him that he was a jerk, but never did anyone in power – either at the network or the PMO – try to influence the content.
The two shows in St. John’s are set for 4:00 and 7:30 on October 19th.
