A coalition of students and young professionals from across the province has sent a letter to Premier Tony Wakeham urging him to move forward with the MOU “immediately.”
The group, known as Friends of Renewable Churchill Energy, or FORCE NL, argues that potential delays could cost the province billions of dollars and thousands of jobs.
They are urging Wakeham to “act with urgency, logic, and fairness,” and to acknowledge the independent oversight already provided on the document by JP Morgan and Power Advisory.
Chair Ben Oates argues that oversight, coupled with the document being publicly available, and debate in the House of Assembly, is sufficient.
He believes the document has been the subject of enough review and it is good as it stands. He says they don’t see the benefit of waiting.
“There’s more of a downside to waiting…the only viable customer for development of the Churchill River (Quebec) will move away. We don’t have time to wait. These projects take 10, 15, 20 years to develop. We have to go soon.”
