A hockey-themed approach to raise money for the next phase of a park for Easter Seals in St. John’s is in its final stages this weekend.
The “Seth and Matty Hat Trick for Easter Seals” campaign encourages people to buy specially-designed toques and hats with the proceeds going to phase 3 of the park. That phase will include development of an outdoor hardcourt surface, which will freeze over in the winter for sledge hockey.
Seth Hyde, a student at Gonzaga High well versed in sticks and pucks through his play-by-play sidelight, says fellow student Matthew Squires, who has cerebral palsy and is non-verbal, absolutely loves hockey. So what began as an effort to raise money for the type of chair he requires to play sledge hockey has mushroomed into a larger campaign.
His family was able to afford the chair on their own so, instead, the proceeds will go to further develop facilities at the Easter Seals park on Mount Scio Road.
The hats, which are $25-$35, come in several colours. The campaign ends at midnight Monday.
