Families with loved ones who died in service overseas, but whose graves are unknown, are being asked for information to help identify four unknown Newfoundland soldiers who were found in unmarked graves.
Forensic anthropologist Sarah Lockyer with the Department of National Defence helps the Canadian Armed Forces coordinate and identify casualties who died and were buried without a marker.
She led the effort to positively identify Private John Lambert of the Newfoundland Regiment six years ago.
Lockyer made the appeal for assistance from local families during a presentation at Memorial University last week.
She was unable to provide information on which battle or where exactly the remains were found, but she’s asking families with loved ones to reach out.
Lockyer is asking anyone who had a loved one who was lost in battle in WWI, WWII or the Korean War, and fought for Newfoundland and Canada and who is missing, to register with the Directorate of History and Heritage with the Department of National Defence.
“All you need to provide is contact information, an email or a phone number, and your name, that’s all we really need.”
