The founder of Team Broken Earth is heading to Jamaica today to assess the infrastructure and the medical needs there in the wake of Hurricane Melissa.
Last month’s hurricane flattened homes and buildings on the western portion of the island.
Dr. Andrew Furey has been in Guatemala with a team of several dozen medical professionals from this province and Calgary volunteering their time to perform everything from hip replacements to cleft palate surgeries and dentistry.
Furey, who resigned as premier earlier this year to return to the medical field, founded Team Broken Earth in 2010 following the earthquake in Haiti.
He calls the work they’re doing very rewarding.
He talks about a patient he saw this week who has been suffering with hip pain since she was born. “When I told her that we could fix her pain with a hip replacement, she just broke down in tears.”
He’s heading to Jamaica today to assess the situation on the ground there and see what assistance they can provide.
He returns to the province on the weekend.
