Landscape NL has recognized the town of Carbonear with an award of excellence for its work on a traditional stone wall on the site of one of the two Rorke Stores.
One of the two historic buildings was heavily damaged in a wind storm in 1999 and had to be removed.
This past summer a traditional dry stone wall was erected at the site in partnership with Heritage NL and with the help of experts in that field in the U.K., Canada and the U.S.
Staff were trained to build a proper dry-stone wall in a three-day, hands-on session.
The work paid off. The town now has an added attraction on Water Street, and an award of excellence from Landscape Newfoundland and Labrador.
