A mayor in central Newfoundland is fuming that his region is left off the 24/7 snowclearing map as drawn up by the provincial government this week.
The PCs, while in opposition, had been complaining about what they saw as insufficient snowclearing capacity, promising to move to a 24/7 protocol. The former transportation minister, Elvis Loveless, says the new 24/7 map looks a lot like the one that they were going by.
Current Transportation Minister Barry Petten said at his news conference in Foxtrap Tuesday that you can’t put a price on human safety.
Gambo Mayor Peter Lush told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly that the TCH in that area is their lifeline. He speaks from personal experience when tragedy struck on the highway some forty years ago when his wife and their next door neighbor were driving to work in Gander early one morning.
“My next door neighbor was killed and my late wife ended up a paraplegic – for years – a woman who never got the chance to see her grandchildren born,” says Lush. “This is not right.”
