The company which sells most of the electricity the island consumes is going to do a pilot project to reduce usage during peak times.
Newfoundland power is partnering with Mysa, a St. John’s-based thermostat company.
Starting this winter, the program is open to a limited number of the utility’s customers who have electric baseboard heating. Participants will receive rewards for enrolling and staying active in the program, which runs across two winter seasons.
During peak demand events, Mysa will make small automatic temperature adjustments to help ease pressure on the electricity grid – a change it says most customers won’t even notice.
Anyone interested can enroll through the Mysa app or on their website. If a Newfoundland Power customer is interested but doesn’t have the specialized thermostat, they can still participate but must have one installed by January 6.
