Newfoundland Power crews are working diligently to get power restored to customers following a vicious wind and snow storm that that knocked out power to approximately 22,000 customers.
Hardest hit was central Newfoundland, the Bonavista Peninsula and Twillingate.
Newfoundland Power spokesperson Glenda Power says while wind gusts of up to 140 km/h toppled lines and poles, heavy snowfall and blizzard conditions impeded crews from effecting repairs overnight.
“There was so much snow, and road conditions were so treacherous, our crews who would normally be out…were unable to get passage through certain roadways.” As of 9:00 this morning the number of affected customers had been whittled down to 17,000 and a “full force” of repair crews are on the road restoring power throughout the day.
A full assessment of the damage caused is currently underway, but Power says it runs the gamut from downed lines and polls to arching on the lines.
