Lawyers are in discussions to resolve charges arising from the death of a Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro worker two years ago.
It happened on August 10th, 2023 in the switchyard at the Holyrood Terminal Station and claimed the life of 69-year-old Bill Walsh.
Ten charges were laid under the Occupational Health and Safety Act — nine against Hydro alleging failures to prevent the death, and a single count of failing to ensure worker safety against supervisor Reg Day.
In court today, Hydro lawyer David Eaton said all disclosure has been received and talks continue “to see what, if anything can be resolved,” asking for another six weeks before entering pleas.
That was agreed to by the Crown and Day’s lawyer Jerome Kennedy, and granted by Judge Paul Noble, who noted while it’s set for status on February 11th, “he’d be happy to accept pleas at that time.”
NL Hydro issued an earlier statement saying the tragedy, involving one of their own, continues to weigh heavily on them.
