Mark Carney Sworn In as PM; NL’s Thompson Gets Fisheries Portfolio

Mark Carney was sworn in as Canada’s 24th prime minister.
It followed Justin Trudeau’s visit with Gov. Gen. Mary Simon to formally resign.
The formalities took place at Rideau Hall in Ottawa where Carney is also revealing his first cabinet.
And among them is St. John’s MP Joanne Thompson, who became the new Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, much to the delight of many in this province.

Liberal Leadership Nominations Close with Abbott and Hogan in the Running
Nominations closed for the provincial Liberal leadership with candidates John Abbott and John Hogan confirmed for the leadership contest.
The successful candidate was named during a leadership convention at the Jag Soundhouse in St. John’s on May 3rd.

Fish Harvesters Continue Rally Outside Thompson’s Campaign HQ
Fisheries protests continued as representatives met with minister Joanne Thompson.
The FFAW spent the weekend prior protesting changes to snow crab quotas in area 3K, saying 20 and 25 per cent cuts will force harvesters to keep their boats on shore.
A night before, harvesters gathered at the Convention Centre in downtown St. John’s where Prime Minister Mark Carney held a campaign rally, however they were not allowed to enter the building.
NL Schools Destroy Thousands of Books Over Inaccurate Indigenous Content
Schools in Newfoundland and Labrador have destroyed thousands of books purchased a couple of years ago because they contain numerous inaccuracies about Indigenous history and culture.
A committee which advises the Department of Education felt the resources did not accurately reflect the cultural reality in Newfoundland and Labrador.
For example, not all Indigenous communities have clan systems as a method of organization, elder is not age-based, and Turtle Island is not a creation story for all Indigenous peoples.
Stephenville Airport Downgraded to Registered Aerodrome, Former Councillor Points the Finger at Council
A former town councilor in Stephenville is bemoaning the change in status at the local airport, which has been downgraded to a registered aerodrome as the privately-owned facility continues to struggle with significant financial woes.
The airport was sold to Carl Dymond in 2023 for $6.90, and an agreement to complete lighting upgrades at the facility at a cost of $1.7 million, under what he called the Dymond Group of Companies.
NL Broadcast Icon John Murphy Passes Away, Leaving Lasting Legacy
A man with one of the most distinctive voices in broadcasting and who called the shots at the VOCM Radio Network for more than 25 years, passed away.
John Murphy, who served as the general manager at VOCM starting in the 1970’s through to 2010, began his career at CKCM in Grand Falls in 1963, a time long before social media, computers and automation. Quick witted, and of eloquent tongue, “Murph” as he was known to many in the industry, loved radio and all the things it encompassed.
