Flights have resumed at Wabush Airport after flash-freezing forced the closure of the facility’s runways over the weekend.
Transport Canada, which operates the airport, says the runway was closed on Friday after a sudden and extreme drop in temperatures resulted in a thick layer of ice which bonded to the tarmac.
Crews were up against -20 temperatures which limited the effectiveness of standard de-icing chemicals.
Additional equipment was brought in and the runways reopened yesterday.
The closure resulted in several flight cancellations. PAL Airlines says it is working to get passengers moving with additional flights and chartered aircraft.
