NL Hydro initiated a power watch this morning due to cold and windy weather conditions which created frazil ice along the Bay d’Espoir system.
The power watch has since been lifted, however NL Hydro is continuing to monitor the situation closely.
Frazil ice is slushy ice that forms in lakes and rivers when conditions are windy and very cold.
The ice can clump together causing ice jams at hydro power and municipal water systems.
In the meantime, peak demand on the system yesterday morning reached 1485 mW – consistent with similarly cold days this winter.
NL Hydro says customers on the island are served by a combination of power assets including the Labrador Island Link and the Holyrood Generating Station as well as other Hydro-owned sites.
UPDATE @ 9:30 am Thursday, January 22: The Power Watch for the island is no longer in effect. We'll continue to closely monitor the system and provide updates if necessary. Thanks for your understanding this morning. #nlwx https://t.co/pVS0Efxbpl
