The St. John’s Regional Fire Department is celebrating the career of it’s very first female firefighter.
Captain Gina Burke is retiring on February 1st after serving as a firefighter for the last 34 years.
She began her career at the Mount Pearl station in 1992 and rose through the ranks, earning the position of Fire Leiutenant in April 2009, and Fire Captain in May of 2013.
Burke, who was also a trained paramedic, served on the department’s High Angle Recue Team, Water Rescue Team, Confined Space Team.
Fire Chief Sherry Colford calls Burke “an inspiration” and says her service broke barriers and opened doors for others to follow.
