An unusually stormy fall and winter has caused delays in getting goods to the island, and has become apparent on store shelves.
Retailers don’t have any control over the weather, but a backlog in goods shipped to the island has left many wondering what improvements can be made to existing services.
Jim Cormier of the Retail Council of Canada says his members feel the effects of weather delays well beyond the initial disruption.
“You end up with these huge backlogs. Most of our members say even after just a general delay of a day or two, that puts them about five days behind when it comes to trying to replenish shelves the retail stores in Newfoundland and Labrador. That’s a problem.”
Cormier says everyone through the supply chain has been making “extraordinary efforts” to get products to stores throughout the province, but all that hard work goes by the wayside as the result of a five-day weather delay.
