This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Persian Gulf War and Canadian veterans of that operation are still seeking the recognition afforded to colleagues who served in other campaigns.
Bell Island native and President of the Persian Gulf Veterans Association, Harold Davis, says Veterans’ Affairs’ Commemoration Department has three days of events planned in Halifax at the end of the month to mark the occasion.
Davis says various provinces are signing proclamations, but the federal government has yet to address their concerns.
He says Canada is finally going to recognize Gulf War illness, but they still need to work through the details of what that means for veterans.
He says while Prime Minister Mark Carney mentioned the issue during the election campaign, they haven’t heard anything since.
“He put us in his election platform, saying we’ll get proper recognition…without consultation with Persian Gulf Veterans of Canada, and he got elected. I reached out, and, not a word.” He claims “they used veterans again, as far as I’m concerned anyway.”
