The province’s justice minister is reaffirming her commitment to taking action on police oversight.
In a statement, Helen Conway-Ottenheimer says government will strengthen police oversight through a “modern, transparent, and independent framework.”
She says the goal is to implement community-driven civilian oversight, including establishing an independent police board, which would be “civilian led, politically neutral, and reflective of the province’s diverse communities.”
Conway-Ottenheimer says since she became minister she has taken “every opportunity” to speak with stakeholders on the issue.
She says government is looking at various models that exist, and they will implement a system that best fits the province’s policing structure.
Conway-Ottenheimer states that they want to establish a model that compliments, not duplicates, the work already being down by the Serious Incident Response Team.
Government also plans to conduct a review of the Law Enforcement Oversight Commission Act.
She says they are committed to a model that supports everyone, and taking the time now to ensure the Act is comprehensive will “lead to stronger long-term outcomes and a trusted police oversight system.”
