Stella Maris Academy in Trepassey prides itself in its basketball program which has turned out elite athletes for years, but the school gym has fallen into disrepair, putting the immediate future of the program into doubt.
Parts of the school gym are open to the elements, and after-school sports have had to be cancelled according to parents.
The school posted last week that junior basketball was cancelled because the gym was too cold in which to play.
Despite the setback, the Vikings have been tearing up the court at the Provincials in Conne River.
Area MHA, Loyola O’Driscoll says he’s been in contact with the school administration, NL Schools and the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure on addressing the issue.
Officials paid a visit to the school Friday with a sky lift to access the damage and determine what work is required to get students back in the gym as soon as possible.
