Today is International Women’s Day, a day set aside to mark the achievements of women and to draw attention to the gains yet to be made.
2025 marked the 100th anniversary of women achieving the vote in what is now Newfoundland and Labrador.
The minister responsible for women and gender equality, Lela Evans, paid tribute to the women of Newfoundland and Labrador who are representing their districts and making change in the House of Assembly.
“As we near the conclusion of the 100th anniversary of women achieving the right to vote, I want to recognize the remarkable women who served in this very legislature. Your leadership, dedication, and the example that you provide each day, continues to open the doors and inspire future generations of women and girls throughout our province, and for this, we should be grateful.” She then went off-script. “I just want to say Speaker, before we actually couldn’t vote, let alone sit in the House of Assembly, to make decisions that impact us as women. That’s so important.”
