The MHA for Conception Bay East Bell Island Fred Hutton has been keeping a close eye on the latest developments in the town.
He calls the fire a “huge loss” for the town.
“This was a very stubborn, extremely big fire that spread quickly on the inside” says Hutton.
“The owner of the building and the person running the restaurant showed up within minutes of the smoke alarm and fire alarms going off. And at that point, they went to the door and the heat was so intense, and the smoke, that they couldn’t go in. The firefighters were in there very briefly, but the Fire Chief pulled them out.”
State of Emergency declared
Huge billows of thick smoke were blown into the community, forcing the town to call a Sate of Emergency and the evacuation of a portion of town including Bridget’s Road, Hardin’s Hill, Boulder Lane, Somerton Lane, and the bottom of Anglican Church Road.
Residents in those areas are now being allowed to return.
