The opposition says it’s time for government to cut the tax from pre-prepared foods and non-alcoholic beverages.
Liberal Leader John Hogan brought forward a Private Members Bill in the House yesterday, noting that Manitoba has taken similar action.
Hogan says the move would save families money at a time when affordability has reached a breaking point.
“If the government wants people to be able to afford things, they need to make it cheaper for people. And one thing that the government can control is the taxes on these goods in the grocery stores. So we think it’s important to put that forward, and we’re happy to make that suggestion to the government,” he told reporters.
We hope and wish that they take us up on our offer to help work on these important issues for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, because the cost of things like groceries doesn’t seem to be getting better, it seems to be getting worse.”
