The contracts for the construction of a new school in Cartwright, and the redevelopment of the Martin Gallant Building in Stephenville Crossing, have been cancelled following a detailed review of both projects.
The decision to cancel the contracts came after “significant” cost escalation risks, lengthy delays and design issues were identified.
A $38.4 million contract was awarded last year to build a new K-12 school in the community to replace the aging Henry Gordon Academy.
The $283,000 contract for renovations to the Bay St. George government services building was awarded in 2023.
Government says even though both projects were already underway, very little work had been completed and they’re now reassessing and resetting the scope of the projects.
The department says government remains committed to both projects and they’re now looking at “innovative options” including prefabricated or modular construction for the school in Cartwright, and a reassessment of the work on the Martin Gallant Building project.
