An organization heavily involved in helping people find stable housing is worried about what the future holds with the pending closure of the transitional housing hotel near St. John’s Airport.
Not only does government intend to pull out of Horizons 106, but it is maintaining the cap on occupancy at 75, even though there is physical capacity for about 100.
Government assures that it will have other options for the current occupants.
Doug Pawson, the executive director of End Homelessness St. John’s, can’t imagine what those options would be. He fears that those who live on Airport Road will end up in untenable – and dangerous – situations.
“We don’t have the resources either on the support side or the RNC side to respond to what currently is happening much less to what is going to happen,” says Pawson.
“Winding operations down and ending these supports isn’t going to make things better – it’s just going to make things a lot worse.”
The facility is set to cease operation as transitional housing in December.
