The YMCA of Newfoundland and Labrador is speaking out after a post was shared on social media alleging abusive behavior towards children at a pre-kindergarten program they run in Torbay.
The item, which received hundreds of shares, was posted to Facebook earlier this month.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary confirms that they did receive a report alleging abuse at a childcare program in Torbay in February. However, after a “thorough investigation that included multiple witness statements and site visits,” the file was closed about a month later without charges.
In a statement to VOCM News, the YMCA says due to privacy and confidentiality issues they cannot comment on individual children, families, employees or investigative processes.
They do state, however, that when concerns involving children are brought forward they address them through “established policies, reporting requirements, and review processes.”
When the concerns of abuse were raised, they say those processes were activated and both the RNC and the Department of Education were called.
They say the situation was reviewed by the proper authorities and they worked closely with them throughout.
The YMCA states that the safety and well-being of children is their priority, and “families can be assured that concerns involving children are addressed through established processes designed to protect children, support families, and ensure accountability.”
